Symptoms of Dog Diseases
There are many different doggy ailments out there and it’s important to understand them and prevention in order to protect our dogs from disease as much as possible.
The symptoms of dog diseases all vary depending on the disease so here are a few of the more common conditions and all the relevant symptoms of dog diseases.
Kennel Cough – This is a highly contagious disease that affects the respiratory system and is otherwise known as Tracheobronchitis. This can be caused by a combination of various virus’s and bacteria. The symptom of kennel cough is, not surprisingly coughing. It will be a dry and forced almost continual coughing. It is usually quite mild however it can become more severe especially in geriatric dogs and puppies.
Parvovirus –
Parvo is an extremely dangerous fatal virus that severely
damages dog health and weakens them for life. If a dog contracts
Parvo they are most likely to contract it again throughout their
life and can be permanently weakened and fatigued. Parvovirus
symptoms are quite indistinct and can be attributed to numerous
other illnesses. Typical Parvo symptoms include diarrhoea and
vomiting. For further information on Parvovirus and it’s
symptoms you can visit our ‘Dog Parvo Symptoms’ page.
Rabies – This is a viral
infection that can be contracted by all mammals including
humans. It is transmitted by an infected animal biting another
mammal, usually dogs biting dogs or humans. It infects the
central nervous system and is guaranteed to be fatal. Once
symptoms appear there is no treatment or cure. There is,
however, a vaccination available and it is recommended you
ensure your dog gets vaccinated. Rabies has the famous symptom
of frothing at the mouth.
Corona – No, unfortunately we aren’t talking about an alcoholic pup here; Corona is a short way of saying canine Coronavirus which attacks the dog’s gastrointestinal tract. This virus is similar to Parvo Virus except the symptoms are a bit milder and Coronavirus can be treated much more effectively than Parvo.
Leptospirosis – This is a viral infection that is spread through contact with organic fluids. This disease can also be transmitted to humans and attacks the kidneys causing jaundice, fever, vomiting and diarrhoea. Treatment includes IVF, antibiotics and intensive care. Upon recovery you can expect your dog to suffer permanent kidney problems.
Distemper – This is an airborne virus and as such is highly contagious. The early signs are often similar to various different symptoms of dog diseases and are often just viewed as a simple cold when it starts out. Later on it develops into nervous twitches, paralysis and seizures. This is no treatment.
If you suspect your dog is suffering from an illness of disease you should consult your veterinary clinic immediately and take your dog in to be examined. If symptoms includes things like blood in the urine and stool you should take a sample in to the vet in a clean airtight container. Your vet will undertake a thorough examination of your dog and talk you through the treatment.
